Behind the music

About HABIT.

HABIT's work in New Zealand drum and bass spans DJing, production, radio, and promoting through Church of Bass. Long associated with Wellington, he built his approach through club nights and festivals as well as studio releases, with music appearing on ProgRAM and RAM Records.

In a 2020 interview with Gwarden, he traced his commitment to drum and bass to seeing Bad Company UK on their Shot Down on Safari tour. Concord Dawn showed him what New Zealand producers could achieve, while a DJ Craze set prompted him to buy his first turntables. Those experiences fed into a broad approach to selection: he described playing liquid, halftime, neurofunk, and jump-up, with the time slot determining how a set should unfold.

He also described opening up his production to different styles. Having previously used different names for different genres, he told Gwarden that he had brought those strands together under HABIT, making room for experimentation instead of fixing on a single subgenre.

His involvement extended to The Garden Shed on Radioactive.fm and organising events around New Zealand. Church of Bass also became his own label, extending that work as a promoter into releasing music.
