Behind the music
About Hillsdom.
Hillsdom are Jack and Jake, two British producers who began making music together long before their first drum and bass release. They met at school and played in bands, with Jack on guitar and Jake on drums, giving them a shared musical language before they opened a production session.
They spent several years developing their sound before Lucid Dreams, featuring Novokane, appeared on Pilot Records in 2017. Its vocal was already written when they found the right musical setting for it, an early example of their preference for building a song around an idea rather than adding a singer at the end.
Releases on ProgRAM and RAM Records expanded that sound. In 2021, Tell Me Your Lies / Stone Soul and I Wonder / Igloo led into Fauxtopia / Gaslight. The latter pairing makes the contrast especially clear, with the synth-led energy of Fauxtopia alongside the more liquid, vocal-led Gaslight with Maddy.
Their band background remains useful when they are writing: both understand harmony and rhythm, but bring different instincts to the same track. It gives Hillsdom room to move between melodic liquid and bigger dancefloor records while keeping a sense of song at the centre.
