Behind the music
About Jappa.
Jappa is a drum and bass producer and DJ originally from Watford, with close ties to Bristol’s OCC Recordings. His approach draws on jungle, jump-up, grime, and hip-hop, while his own account of production also places melody alongside bass design and drum programming.
OCC grew from friendships with Lupo, Objectiv, Teej, and Trakker. In a joint interview, Jappa recalled the group forming around shared tracks and a conversation following Boomtown. The core recording group later settled around Jappa, Lupo, Objectiv, and Teej, with collaboration and mutual criticism built into the process.
His work with MCs includes Waterworks with NV and OCC’s Throne with Skibadee. The collective’s members described vocals as an important counterpart to their sparse, bass-led productions. Jappa’s collaboration with Lupo, Darkest Night, likewise emerged from an idea they developed together rather than a fixed division of production roles.
In his own studio account, Jappa describes Style & Pattern as a fusion of jump-up and rollers. The Access Virus Ti2 has been central to his bass and sound-design sessions, with recorded patches resampled and reshaped into material for tracks. That hands-on method sits alongside a willingness to write with simpler tools, including making Keep On Movin' on a laptop while on a boat.
