Behind the music

About K Jah.

K Jah's music draws on a long involvement with Birmingham's rave culture, from tape packs and pirate radio to producing jungle and rolling drum and bass. Reggae was part of the sound of his childhood, while the city's Institute helped turn listening into a commitment to raving and DJing. He later broadcast on Kool FM Midlands.

His first release, Inception, came through Sappo's Advisory Records. Speaking to Inside DnB in 2022, K Jah described it as an Amen-led track and credited Sappo and DJ Rayden with helping him learn production. A recommendation from Jinx brought his music to Dazee's attention in 2012, beginning a relationship with Ruffneck Ting that produced records including Clap For That and the Supaclash EP.

The breadth of his influences became an explicit part of his debut album for Natty Dub. He described bringing together rolling drum and bass, 1990s jungle, and the earlier rave sound, with contributions from Diligent Fingers and Natty D. K Jah also runs South Central Recordings, established in 2019. The label gives him another outlet for working with vocalists, alongside his production and DJ work.
