Behind the music

About Lens.

Lens is a drum and bass DJ and producer from Brighton whose move into making records grew out of a new enthusiasm for jungle. Already active as a DJ, she became the voice of Hospital Records’ Rinse show in 2019, before beginning to release her own music in 2022.

Her first production, Love The Way with Lally, appeared through Hospital Records. The Marufo EP on Spearhead Records then gave a fuller picture of her writing. It brought together the liquid approach of Give Me A Reason, the jungle of the title track, and the bass-led Gun Point.

Discovering 1990s jungle in 2019 changed how she approached music. During lockdown she began searching for samples, including material on her grandparents’ jazz CDs, then chopping breaks and assembling tracks. She has described that process as an opportunity to experiment, rather than follow a fixed plan.

The EP’s name came from her favourite chicken restaurant in the Algarve. Its different tracks reflected the range she already explored as a DJ, but their construction came from time spent digging, sampling, and finding an individual way into production.
