Behind the music
About Loz Contreras.
Loz Contreras is a Leeds drum and bass producer whose music grew from sampling and a love of soul. Alongside his solo work, his partnership with Macca developed after the two were booked at Newcastle’s World Headquarters. They recognised that Contreras’s musical ideas and samples could work with Macca’s approach to production.
Early solo tracks including Baby It’s You reached listeners through Liquicity, while Senna explored his liquid side. For the partnership’s first Fokuz EP in 2014, a piano sample Contreras sent over became Always Yours. Their process often began with a small musical idea, passed back and forth until another sample or vocal changed its direction.
That exchange continued on their 2017 SGN:LTD single Anything for You / In the Mood. The former began during a visit to Macca’s Portsmouth studio, with most of the initial track written in an afternoon before months of refinement. On In the Mood, Contreras added a vocal hook to Macca’s starting idea.
Their Lost Origins EP for Spearhead widened that approach. Contreras described Don’t Give Up and I Need You as amen rollers, while Becca Jane Grey’s vocal helped shape the title track. The pair valued hearing each other transform a tune.
