Behind the music

About Mean Teeth.

Mean Teeth are neurofunk duo Marius and Mark, also known as Voice and Ophzet. Based in Estonia and Lithuania when they began working together, they built a partnership around heavy drum and bass with a strong sense of groove, eventually turning that idea into Bring Back The Funk.

Their backgrounds gave them different instincts in the studio. Marius had spent years breakdancing and listening to funk; Mark worked in audio engineering and drew inspiration from the rhythm sections of rock and metal bands. One could develop a playful idea while the other shaped it into something that would hold a dancefloor.

The connection started when Mark heard music coming from Estonia and contacted Marius. A short loop grew into Nastiest, released through Bad Taste Recordings, and further records followed on labels including Plasma Audio and Program.

Optiv helped bring them to Cause4Concern. What they thought would be an EP grew into a sixteen-track album after the label heard the demos. Released in four parts, Bring Back The Funk put the duo’s intention plainly in its title: the technical weight of neurofunk should still leave people something to move to.
