Behind the music
About Mikal.
Mikal’s connection to drum and bass began while jungle was taking shape in the UK. Having spent part of his childhood in Sweden, he returned to England and found the music on the radio. As he explained to UKF, an introduction to a basic studio through a local youth worker gave him a starting point for production.
Metalheadz became a central home for his music after he sent the label a succession of demos. His debut album, Wilderness, arrived in 2016, following singles and the Immaterial EP. He approached the album as a collection of the different areas of drum and bass he enjoyed, with collaborators including Break, Chimpo, Sophie Barker, Xtrah, and RIOT.
His catalogue also extends through Symmetry, Utopia Music, SGN:LTD, and Disfigured Dubz. The latter reflects a dubstep strand alongside his drum and bass output. Work with Asian Dub Foundation took him into another setting: he mixed More Signal, More Noise and engineered the group’s soundtrack project for THX 1138.
Metalheadz marked a decade of his releases for the label in 2021, by which point his second album, Metalwork, had joined Wilderness in the catalogue.
