Behind the music

About Nasty Habits.

Nasty Habits is a recording alias of Doc Scott, rather than a separate producer or group. It is closely associated with the darker side of his early catalogue and the enduring Shadow Boxing. The recordings sit within his wider history with Reinforced Records, Metalheadz, and his own ThirtyOne Recordings.

In a direct interview published by Back To The Oldskool, Scott described NHS and Here Come The Drumz as concepts that could support multiple versions rather than simply finished, unchangeable tracks. He also explained that the initials NHS connected his early record label, his Doc name, and the Nasty Habits graffiti crew he had belonged to.

Shadow Boxing appeared on his label in 1996. Scott said he wanted to make the memorable loop that listeners would hum to their friends after a night out. The recording was also a statement about the effectiveness of simplicity: musical impact did not require a densely complicated arrangement.

The alias’s catalogue has since been revisited through remasters and reinterpretations. The 2020 collection 1994/2001 Remastered gathered tracks including Deep Beats, Liquid Fingers, Prototyped, and both versions of Shadow Boxing. An earlier 2016 reissue paired the original Prototyped with a new version by Hidden Turn, presenting two approaches to the same recording.
