Behind the music

About Natalie Williams.

Natalie Williams is a singer and songwriter rooted in jazz, soul, and R&B, with a recording career that also reaches into drum and bass. Her collaboration with Goldie on I Adore You brought that wider musical background into drum and bass.

A long-running part of her work is Soul Family Sundays at Ronnie Scott’s, a residency she began in 2007. Fronting the Soul Family band, she performs original music alongside soul and jazz repertoire, with a cast of singers and musicians that includes Vula, Brendan Reilly, and Vanessa Haynes.

Her solo records show a similarly broad writing practice. My Oh My and Secret Garden draw on soul and R&B; Where You Are explores jazz, while Kaleidoscope brings in folk influences. The EP Straight on Til Morning was written with bassist and producer Robin Mullarkey.

Storytelling runs through those songs. Williams has described the EP’s inspiration in her childhood fascination with Peter Pan, using that sense of imagination alongside everyday subjects. Her own stage work includes touring with the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars and performing at the club’s 60th anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2019.
