Paul SG

Paul SG brings a drummer’s ear to soulful drum and bass. Originally from Germany and based in Vienna, he grew up with musical parents, studied percussion, and played in bands before finding a new use for those rhythmic instincts in D&B.

The pull of the music was immediate: the breakbeats of mid-1990s jungle caught his attention, and he began buying records and playing local gigs in the early 2000s. His own productions developed around jazz, soul, and funk, with carefully chosen samples and basslines that give the drums something to lean against.

A close relationship with LTJ Bukem brought releases on Good Looking Records and appearances at Bukem In Session. His records have also appeared on Innerground Records, Liquid V, and Fokuz Recordings, alongside the music he releases through Jazzsticks Recordings, founded in 2009.

Jazzsticks grew into a circle of collaborators including Flowrian, Pulsaar, and Decon. Paul has explained that running the label means giving each record time rather than rushing out the next one. Its sample-rich liquid sound reflects his own taste, with the grain of older recordings and the movement of the drums doing much of the storytelling.
