Behind the music
About Phrase.
Phrase is a bass music producer and DJ from Wellington, New Zealand. His output moves between melodic drum and bass and more stripped-back productions, with a parallel stream of freely shared edits and bootlegs.
The contrast is clear in his releases for Ranger Records. Get To Know / You, released in June 2025, introduced the label with two liquid drum and bass tracks. The follow-up, Kill Plan / Final Test, arrived that November, moving into heavier territory with a minimal approach. Both releases credit Conor Butler as their writer and producer.
His collaborations include Worldwide with Rider Shafique and Missed the Message with Aaron Payne and Sydney Bryce. Alongside those releases, he has shared reworks of songs by Cleo Sol, Skepta and Young Lord, and A$AP Ferg, using his own channels to make them available to listeners.
DJing remains part of that activity. A set recorded at Rhythm and Alps 2024/25 sits alongside the mixes and reworks he shares through his own channels.
