Behind the music
About Raw Q.
Raw Q is the production name of New York DJ Beau, whose involvement in the city’s drum and bass scene includes Camouflage, Jungle Sky, and Intrigue Music. He began working in the studio with DJ Ani in 1995, making music for DJ Soulslinger’s Jungle Sky imprint.
His solo Vital Soul appeared on DJ Zinc’s Bingo imprint in 2004. Coupled with dBridge’s remix of Zinc’s Departure, the release reached number 88 on the UK Singles Chart and number 11 on the Official Dance Singles Chart. Later releases include Caspian Moon / Summer Rain on Influence, Earthdub on Driven, and I Want Him Dead! on Intrigue.
Speaking to Brooklyn Radio in 2013, Beau traced a consistent interest in dub, jazz, and hip-hop through his DJ selections, even as the surrounding music changed. He also described the importance of playing to his hometown crowd, having come into the scene as a raver before becoming a DJ. That interview found him working closely with Intrigue, discussing a follow-up version of Sweet Pea and a remix for Random Movement.
