Behind the music

About Rockwell.

Rockwell is the British drum and bass producer Thomas Green, whose records bring detailed programming into contact with influences from across electronic music. Early work for labels including Metalheadz, Critical, and Shogun Audio led to his 2015 debut album, Obsolete Medium. He later used the same name for his own label.

His productions have drawn on jungle, footwork, grime, and slower bass music, but his approach changed for the 2023 album Low Art. Rather than bending drum and bass around each influence, he described bringing those influences into a more recognisable drum and bass framework. Post-rock introductions and rougher textures became part of that process.

The album developed from music written during lockdown, rather than beginning with a fixed intention to make another full-length record. Green wanted to move away from the dense construction of his debut towards a more flexible way of writing, with room to finish ideas before becoming absorbed in technical detail.

For Estranged and Recognise, he processed simple tones through a guitar pedal associated with Swedish death metal. The resulting distorted textures let him explore a less polished surface while keeping the writing grounded in drum and bass. The album’s visual identity was developed with artist Joshua Hughes-Games.
