Alix Perez founded 1985 Music in 2016, with 170 and 85 BPM music at its roots and the freedom to release at other tempos. Monty, Visages, and Submarine appear alongside his own productions, while Perez’s design work carries through to sleeves and clothing. Vinyl was part of the label from the beginning, bringing its artwork and music together in physical releases.
Its various-artist projects are arranged with the same care as artist albums. Perez sequences them so that tempo and mood can change across the running order, and has used compilation appearances to introduce producers before their individual releases. Fragment and X Years bring several label artists together; 1985 Music X Sofa Sound takes the collaboration further, with Perez working alongside DLR. The catalogue combines those shared projects with releases that give individual producers more space for their own music.
