Behind the music
About Specimen A.
Specimen A is a British bass music project with roots in drum and bass and a history that also takes in breaks, dubstep, and electro. Brothers Phil and Mo Jones began making music against a background of classical training before their interest in synthesisers drew them towards electronic production.
The project moved into breaks around 2006, working with Far Too Loud on records including Contamination and Soldiers at War. Signing to Funkatech led to further singles including Exodus and Dirty Disco, followed by the Hazardous Material series in 2008.
That willingness to work across tempos carried into the Rock Star EP for Funkatech. Its own release description placed drumstep and drum and bass alongside glitch-hop and dubstep, with Suffice, Nickita, and Miss Trouble contributing to the record.
The later partnership with Deekline brought Specimen A into a sustained run of vocal-led music for Jungle Cakes. Their Get Lucky album includes Bangarang with Navigator and Ride Pon It with Warrior Queen, drawing a range of vocalists into their shared productions. Specimen A’s work has continued with the 2026 album Girls, Money, Drink & Drugs.
