Nick The Lot is a Brighton producer whose sense of humour runs through the artwork and track names, while the records themselves mean business. His background is familiar to plenty of D&B fans: listening at school, going to raves, buying decks and developing an expensive attachment to vinyl.

A copy of Cubase turned that enthusiasm towards production. He began as a DJ, using the name DJ Lockdown, before making tracks became another obsession. Releases for Grid Recordings and Zombie Recordings helped establish the Nick The Lot catalogue, with jump-up providing a foundation for a sound that also works through longer rolling grooves.

His own Pick The Lock Records gave him room to release music and bring newer producers through. He remembered how difficult it could be to get a demo heard, and sought out artists through personal connections and SoundCloud. When commissioned artwork did not quite fit, he learned to make it himself, giving the label its distinctive homemade character.

The Back Of A Lorry series extended that approach to collaborative label compilations. His solo Helicopter, released on Crucast in 2025, reached another audience with a relentless roller and a vocal hook built to stay in your head. The joke-filled presentation is part of the personality; the attention to drums, basslines and what works in a set is what keeps the records moving.
