Behind the music

About Spor.

Spor is the drum and bass project of Jon Gooch, whose early recording career developed through Renegade Hardware after he handed out demos in London clubs. He subsequently established Lifted Music with Chris Renegade, creating a platform for technically detailed drum and bass informed by musical interests outside the genre. In a joint interview with Memtrix, Gooch recalled making abstract electronic pieces while still at school, with Warp Records and Squarepusher among his reference points.

His debut Spor album, Caligo, appeared in 2015 through his own Sotto Voce imprint. Working on it involved returning to old computer projects and preparing them carefully before the creative process could continue. Gooch explained to UKF that keeping a computer responsive mattered to the way he wrote energetic music, and that committing sounds to audio could be more useful than indefinitely revisiting every production decision. The album belongs to the Spor catalogue, alongside the collaborative Darkest Hours and Super Trace with Memtrix.

The Black Eyed release followed with contributions from Phace, Icicle, and Linguistics. Gooch presented it on the Spor section of his own label's website, offering listeners a free or paid download through BitTorrent. Further Spor work has included the audiovisual Anachronic EP and his remix of Nitepunk and Yianna's Feel This Way, released by UKF in 2024. His booking biography also documents his work on the artwork and visuals accompanying the project, connecting the recordings to a broader visual practice.
