Behind the music

About Sustance.

Sustance is Oscar Harding, a drum and bass producer whose records leave room for both weight and soul. Before releasing under the name, he worked as an engineer and in-house producer at a South London studio, learning the trade from a job that began with making tea.

That work included sessions with Lethal Bizzle and brought him into contact with Foreign Beggars. Sharing a studio with the group helped connect him with Alix Perez and the wider drum and bass scene. He left commercial studio work to concentrate on his own music, with early releases reaching Invisible Recordings and Dispatch Recordings.

His relationship with Shogun Audio developed through SGN:LTD, leading to the Blood Money and Quasi EPs. A move to Berlin gave him a different way to work: much of the equipment stayed in storage while he wrote on a laptop and headphones. Quasi places heavier tracks beside Rumours, featuring Ruby Letitia, and I’ll Be There with Visages.

Perceived Connections followed in 2023, with a deluxe edition in 2025. His teaching also extends the studio beyond his own releases: he has shared production advice through Patreon and helped subscribers’ music reach labels. It is a practical continuation of the knowledge he picked up while working his way through other people’s sessions.
