Behind the music

About Sweetie Irie.

Sweetie Irie is a British reggae and dancehall vocalist whose sound-system background has carried into jungle, drum and bass, and UK garage. His voice is part of a line of British MCing that connects those scenes, with a recording career stretching from Aswad collaborations to recent work with Sigma.

He learnt his craft on local sounds, starting with a bedroom sound called Invaders. Relatives were involved in Paddington Terror, later known as Terror Tone, and he went on to join One Love. Playing its blues dances and house parties meant singing over different kinds of music, an experience he has credited with shaping his approach in the studio.

His early recording career included the dancehall mix of Aswad’s On And On and his 1991 debut album, DJ Of The Future. A decade later, he joined Ed Case on the garage refix of Gorillaz’ Clint Eastwood, taking that sound-system delivery to another audience.

His jungle work includes UK Allstars, the multi-MC recording on Congo Natty’s Jungle Revolution. With Benny Page, he went beyond guest appearances to make the joint album P.U.R.P.L.E, released in 2018. The partnership brought his reggae and dancehall vocals into a sustained drum and bass project.

More recently, he teamed up with Sigma for ANOTHER ONE, released on 2 October 2026.
