Behind the music
About The Ganja Kru.
The Ganja Kru was the collaboration between DJ Hype, DJ Zinc, and Pascal. Each member already had an individual production identity, while the collective brought their work together under a recognisable banner. Pascal’s official Playaz Recordings biography identifies the original trio and distinguishes it from the separate Ganja Records label.
Their catalogue includes the Super Sharp Shooter EP and the 1997 New Frontiers EP. Recordings on the former retain individual member credits: Physical features Zinc, Revolution features Hype, and It’s Personal features Pascal. The collective name therefore covers a shared release framework as well as collaborative work.
The connection between hip-hop and jungle is central to that history. In an original retrospective, Trench described the group’s combination of rap samples, funk elements, percussion, and bass as a meeting point for b-boys and ravers. It also placed Hype’s Ganja Kru productions within the development of early jump-up.
New Frontiers EP expanded that catalogue across seven recordings, including No Fear, Magic, Gone Are The Days, and This World. Its guest credits included Rude Bwoy Monty, Mary Joy, and DJ Daddy. The release sits alongside the members’ independent records, preserving the distinction between the trio’s shared banner and the individual careers that surrounded it.
