Behind the music
About T>I.
T>I is Norwich producer Mat South, a DJ long before his own records began appearing in other people’s sets. That experience shapes the music: drums lead the way, bass provides the weight, and the arrangement leaves enough room for another tune to sit alongside it. He writes with the possibilities of the mix in mind.
His early T>I releases arrived on DJ Marky’s Innerground Records in 2012. Years of singles and EPs followed before Blank Canvas, his debut album for Critical Music in 2020. Working with Kasra helped him commit to the finished selection rather than continually replacing tracks with something newer.
Groove often comes from small irregularities. A delayed hit or an offbeat sound can suggest the next part of a tune, and South builds the rest around it. He has described his usual productions as clean, bass-heavy rollers, designed to combine with music from several different corners of drum and bass.
His Sofa Sound work continues that approach. Hold It is deliberately straightforward and heavy, while 17mm grew from a drum idea into something more driven by its reese bass. Hearing another DJ combine one of his tracks differently can reveal possibilities he missed himself. That exchange between the studio and the booth is central to the T>I sound.
