Heist is Jim Muir, a drum and bass producer whose catalogue ranges from heavy jump-up to deeper, more spacious tracks. His first single appeared in 2003, and releases for Metalheadz, V Recordings, Playaz Recordings and Low Down Deep Recordings followed. Engineering, label work and teaching have become just as important to his place in the scene.
He started Co-Lab Recordings with Benny Co-Lab in 2002. The partnership divided the work between finding and finishing music and keeping the releases moving, with related imprints giving different sounds their own space. Alongside that work, Muir spent years in the studio with Goldie, developing an engineering relationship that fed into his own practice.
His debut artist album, Iacon LP, arrived through Low Down Deep in 2019, unfolding across a series of EPs. He deliberately focused it on the jump-up his listeners knew, drawing inspiration from 1980s animation, science fiction and Dillinja’s Cybotron. The earlier Violent Rain EP for Metalheadz shows another side of the catalogue.
One-to-one production teaching grew out of that accumulated studio experience. He has also worked closely with DJ Hype, whose track selection helped shape the Flying Crane EP. Whether he is writing his own material or helping someone finish theirs, the detail of how a record sounds remains central.
