Behind the music

About Tom Small.

Tom Small is a Prague drum and bass producer and DJ whose releases connect the Czech scene with labels including Dispatch Recordings, Proximity Recordings, and Deafmuted Records. His early work grew out of making music on a computer with friends, before the desire to create his own sounds took over.

In a 2013 interview with Shadowbox, he traced a decisive burst of motivation to Alix Perez's 1984 and the album that followed it. After entering the YoungBLOOD competition, he contacted Czech label Deafmuted, where Paralyzing Ways became part of the Depthblinded 3 compilation. Fiction / Remover and the Skepticism EP followed on the label.

Collaboration also shaped his early catalogue. Work with Bredren appeared on Dispatch's Transit 2 compilation, while other partnerships included A-Cray and Kryptomedic. His DJ approach ranges from deep selections towards heavier neurofunk, and Proximity described the production side as hard rollers when releasing Future Time in 2016. That four-track EP brought together Black Angel, Falling Walls, Future Time, and Detailed.
