Behind the music
About UnSub.
Unsub is the New Zealand DJ and producer Lily, whose music moves between drum and bass, dubstep, and more experimental bass music. Unsub is one of three distinct creative identities, alongside Alexis K and n0isemakeR, behind Pure Heart Dirty Mind, a NexGen Music sublabel. Their music and visual artwork span solo releases and collaborations.
Her 2019 album Heartbreaker gives that approach a particularly personal focus. Speaking to UKF, Lily described writing about a five-year relationship, allowing anger, affection, and grief to share the same record. Muzic.NZ suggested its drum and bass could be filed under techstep or neurofunk, while noting the musical warmth running through the album. Those styles describe one part of a catalogue that also reaches into dubstep.
The later Blanket Rave album continued her solo work, while releases including Balkanizer and Four Degrees paired Unsub with n0isemakeR. The Rare Candy series extended that collaborative thread to Alexis K. Making the artwork as well as the music gives Pure Heart Dirty Mind a visual continuity across these separate but closely connected projects.
