Behind the music

About Workforce.

Workforce is the solo project of Jack Stevens, formerly one half of SpectraSoul. Launching the name gave him responsibility for every production decision, from the first idea to deciding whether a record was finished, with his own Must Make Music providing its home.

The first Late Night Soundtrack EP arrived in May 2019. Stevens was still part of SpectraSoul at that point, so Workforce began as a separate outlet rather than an announcement that the duo had ended. The name let him explore ideas on his own terms and build a catalogue around that work.

His debut album, Set & Setting, appeared in 2022. Written during the pandemic, it joined tracks and interludes into a carefully considered listening experience. Stevens borrowed its title from the idea that the circumstances around an experience affect how someone understands it, giving the listener a part in completing the record.

For Nothing Iz Sacred in 2025, he wanted to spend less time overthinking. The eight-track album includes Tyler Daley, Bobbie Johnson, Tamara Blessa, Leroy Horns, and Ed Zuccollo. It leaves room for unusual tracks that might never have appeared as singles, alongside the vocal collaborations, keeping the album useful as a place to explore.
