Andy C and Ant Miles started RAM Records in the summer of 1992 with £1,000 and a logo designed by Andy’s sister. Andy was 16, and the label gave the pair somewhere to release their own music as hardcore developed into jungle. His Sour Mash was the first release; working together as Origin Unknown, they followed it with Valley of the Shadows in 1993.
The roster grew with Shimon and Moving Fusion, whose label debut was Turbulence. Andy, Ant, and Shimon also formed Ram Trilogy, releasing Molten Beats in 1999 after Origin Unknown’s 1996 album Speed of Sound. RAM’s nights at The End began in 1998 and ran until the club closed in 2009, before moving to Matter and fabric. The album also took RAM on its first full European tour, carrying the label’s music beyond its UK releases.
Sister label Frequency launched in 2002, with Sub Focus moving from its roster to RAM in 2004. Chase & Status signed in 2007 and released More Than Alot the following year, while Wilkinson joined in 2010. ProgRAM followed in 2012, adding another imprint to a family that had grown well beyond Andy and Ant’s first records.
