DLR started Sofa Sound in Bristol as an outlet for his own music, taking inspiration from his work with Ant TC1 and Dispatch Recordings. Drums, bass, funk, and a little weirdness were the ingredients he wanted in its records, with creative guidance and support for artists becoming part of how he ran the label.
Black Barrel’s Still Warm and music from Dub Head helped the catalogue grow beyond DLR’s productions. M-zine, Molecular, and Genic followed, while the Sofa King Six album series brought emerging contributors into shared collections.
Adam Menzies developed the artwork from DLR’s original idea, giving Sofa Sound a punk-influenced visual identity. DLR remains involved in A&R following the label’s acquisition by Flexout Audio in 2026, with Sofa Sound retaining its own name, artists, and artwork.
