BCee founded Spearhead Records in 2005 after running Rubik Records with Kubiks. Their business interests had begun to diverge, and BCee’s move to Ibiza made the partnership harder to sustain. Spearhead gave him a label of his own, built around music he was willing to invest in and artists who wanted a lasting career in drum and bass.
Soulful drum and bass became its focus, with LSB, Seba, Villem, and McLeod contributing alongside BCee’s productions. Vocalists are an important part of the catalogue too. BCee and Charlotte Haining made Life as We Know It with contributions from Etherwood, DRS, and Tempza, while Emba’s self-titled album brought several singers into the studio and included Holy Ground (Liquid Mix).
Spearhead began putting on events in 2011, with parties at fabric and Village Underground and appearances at Outlook, Let It Roll, and Hospitality on the Beach. Its anniversary collections return to the records as well as introducing new music: the tenth-anniversary project paired remastered tracks with new material and a mix of about 60 records. XX: Celebrating 20 Years of Spearhead continues those collections, marking two decades of releases from the label.
