Bay B Kane is Mel Tanur, a producer whose early hardcore and jungle records include Hello Darkness, Thunder, and Guardian of Ruff. His music belongs to the period when producers were still discovering how far a sampled break could be stretched, chopped, and pushed.
Guardian of Ruff, released through White House Records, gave him an album-length statement at a time when the scene largely revolved around singles. In his Blog to the Oldskool interview, he called it his proudest personal achievement: a chance to take an individual producer’s ideas beyond the usual two sides of a record.
After his prolific early-1990s run, he spent time away from releasing music and worked in music software. His return brought an interest in Future Jungle, using newer production tools while revisiting the slower tempos and rhythmic feel of the early records.
For Tanur, the feeling inside the original break is worth preserving even when its pieces are rearranged. He has described that funk as central to his approach, rather than a formula everyone should follow. Later releases such as Forwards in Reverse and Tricks keep adding to a catalogue where old techniques remain a source of ideas.
