Behind the music

About Calyx.

Calyx is Larry Cons, a British drum and bass producer who was working towards a career as a jazz guitarist when jungle changed his plans. The freedom of the new music appealed to someone already used to playing across different styles. His early solo records found homes at Moving Shadow, Metalheadz, and V Recordings.

His 2005 album No Turning Back brought that first solo period into focus. It included Tearing Us Apart / Are You Ready? and Are You Ready?, records Moving Shadow promoted for their combination of heavy bass, funk, and evolving arrangements. The album preceded the extended partnership with Teebee, rather than being a release by the duo.

Calyx and TeeBee’s first album together, Anatomy, arrived in 2007. They later joined RAM Records, releasing All or Nothing and eventually Plates. Their shared work broadened over time; in a Ticket Fairy interview, they explained that repeating the technical sound of their first collaborations would have left them bored.

His return to solo releases in 2022 began with Tempest / You Want It All and You Want It All on Critical Music. Speaking to UKF, Cons described the freedom of making music on his own again after years of collaboration. Critical’s catalogue subsequently added tracks including House Breaker / Don't Say Nothing and Don’t Say Nothing, continuing a solo story that began well before the duo.
