Behind the music
About Danny Wheeler.
Danny Wheeler is a West London producer and DJ whose career connects drum and bass with the broken-beat tradition of his home city. His later WheelUP project grew from that background, retaining a link to jungle and drum and bass while developing a distinct catalogue in bruk.
His musical life began before club production. In a 2023 interview, Wheeler recalled performing in Carmen Jones at the Old Vic as a child, as well as working at the Royal Opera House, before becoming involved in DJing, pirate radio, and underground music.
Under his own name, Wheeler released the Utopia EP through Liquid V in 2019, including Waves with Chords. His W10 label provided another outlet for his liquid drum and bass.
As WheelUP, he released Good Love through Tru Thoughts in 2021, with guests including Afronaut and Tiawa. Its follow-up, We Are The Magic, arrived in 2023, bringing together collaborators such as Kaidi Tatham and Abacus. A third album, Inner Light, extended that work into house and disco alongside broken beat. His label biography also documents radio residencies on Balamii, Worldwide FM, and 1BTN.
