DJ Dextrous is a producer whose records connect jungle’s early dancefloors with a longer career in composition. Ruffneck Business, Lovable, and the Kings of the Jungle releases are part of that first chapter, with reggae and soundsystem music in the background well before he began making breakbeats.
He grew up hearing ska and reggae on his parents’ radiogram, then found a path through two-tone and bands such as The Specials. By the early 1990s, he was working an office job by day and making records outside those hours, including exclusive tracks for Brockie to play.
His connection with Suburban Base developed when Danny Donnelly heard one of those records at a rave. The releases followed alongside work with Rude Boy Keith, credited together on Kings of the Jungle. Lovable began as a fuller vocal song before taking the form jungle listeners came to know.
Dextrous later moved into library music and television composition. In his UKF interview, he recalled his mother hearing his music on television, a very different kind of recognition from a tune landing in a rave. Both belong to the same career: an early appetite for making records developing into music written for settings beyond the club.
