Behind the music

About General Malice.

General Malice is an American producer and DJ whose jungle records connect chopped breaks with hip-hop and dancehall. His early releases appeared through Japan’s Big Cat Recordings and the Los Angeles label N2O, placing him in a network of producers and DJs working between those musical worlds.

He began experimenting with guitars, drum machines, synthesisers, and turntables at fourteen. Jungle became a particular interest through DJs including R.A.W., Phantom 45, and Danny the Wildchild. A five-track demo, made on an MPC2000, reached N2O’s N8LOC and helped lead to the first Big Cat releases.

The N2O single Launch the Attack / Guns Like Mine included a vocal contribution from Wayne Marshall. In 2003, Malice joined the label’s Diss Da Program tour alongside R.A.W., Capital J, and other artists from that circle, taking the records and exclusive dubplates beyond his home scene.

The albums The Final Takeover and The New Era extend that catalogue, with dancehall voices and rap features among their credits. In a 2004 interview, he also described making darker hardstep alongside ragga jungle, dancehall riddims, and hip-hop. Jungle was the main part of his output, with other styles developing around it.
