Ikon-B is Ben Bromley, a West London jungle producer and DJ whose early years were spent on pirate radio. Beginning in the early 1990s, he played on stations including Kool, Don, Flex, and Dream FM, before building a studio of his own and taking new tracks to Music House for dubplate cuts.
Around 1996 he bought an Akai sampler, a mixing desk, and keyboards, then taught himself how to make the music he was playing. That route from radio to production links his records to the period when a new tune could travel from a home studio to a DJ’s exclusive set without a finished release.
His catalogue includes work for Deep in the Jungle, Ghetto Dub, and Locked Up Music. Tough Love, recorded with Section, appeared through Locked Up in 2018, while his own account also carries mixes and later material such as Give Her Some Lovin.
Format Music provides an outlet for his productions and records by other artists. Kumarachi, RMS, Consumer, and Crisis are among the names connected with its catalogue. The label brings the same interest in sharing new jungle music into a different part of his work.
