Joakuim is the drum and bass alias of French producer Joaquim Plossu. His route into the music began with electronic live production, before time spent living in Mexico City introduced him to liquid records by artists such as Zero T and Alix Perez. Buying records and learning to mix led to a growing interest in making drum and bass, followed by a move to London.
Plossu also works as a composer for the screen, sound designer, and mixing engineer. Under Joakuim, he has kept a particular attachment to jazz-influenced drum and bass, alongside the dub and broken-beat ideas that run through his wider music.
His Sable Noir label gave him a way to release music on vinyl on his own terms. The 2025 album Natural Rythm. developed into a joint project between Sable Noir and Fokuz Recordings, drawing deliberately on the drum and bass he loved from the 2000s and early 2010s.
That album was conceived for home listening as well as DJ use. The eight-track vinyl edition was intended to work as a complete listen at home as well as providing records for his sets.
