Behind the music

About Killer Hertz.

Killer Hertz are a Brighton drum and bass trio whose music combines live musicianship with detailed electronic production. They introduced themselves without revealing their individual identities, wanting listeners to meet the records before any earlier projects or reputations.

All Out brought them to Viper Recordings, although Prometheus was the first track they had actually written together. The Prometheus / Cryogenics EP followed, before Levitation appeared through Friction’s Elevate Records. Living in the same city made it easier to talk through ideas with Friction as the relationship developed.

The musical side is more hands-on than it might first appear. Two members had extensive musical training, and the arpeggios were played rather than simply generated by software. The third brought a drumming background, helping the trio imagine the rhythm and arrangement before getting deep into the production.

They described All Out to UKF as a balance of dancefloor, jump-up, and classic samples. Gorilla, featuring fellow Brighton artist Chris Girl Problem, took the live recording and layering further, leaving them with a demanding mixdown. That combination of composition and heavy production explains the project better than the mystery around its members: the dramatic build-ups come from musicians who enjoy writing the notes as much as shaping the sound.
