Behind the music

About Netsky.

Netsky is Belgian drum and bass producer Boris Daenen, from Antwerp. His early catalogue on Hospital Records established a melodic, liquid side to his work, but his albums also explore the music he grew up hearing and the possibilities of working with other artists. He described Second Nature as a balance between soulful music and dancefloor tracks, rather than an album devoted to either sound alone.

The 2010 track Memory Lane, released on Hospital's Sick Music 2 compilation, is an early point of entry. Looking back on it with UKF, Daenen recalled sending demos to the label and keeping in contact with Tony Colman and Chris Goss before his music found its home there. His fourth album, Second Nature, returned him to Hospital in October 2020, ten years after his debut.

That record links drum and bass with the funk and soul his father introduced him to. Its reinterpretations of music by Roy Ayers, Willie Hutch, and Deniece Williams sit alongside collaborations with Sub Focus, Hybrid Minds, Urbandawn, and Rudimental. Becky Hill sings on Hold On, while Let Me Hold You connects him with Hybrid Minds. Rather than relying on a single nostalgic reference, the album brings those older influences into conversations with contemporary producers and vocalists. It is a useful introduction to both his liquid foundations and his interest in song-led collaboration.
