Behind the music
About Potential Badboy.
Potential Badboy is London producer Chris McFarlane, whose history reaches back to the early formation of jungle. His first record, Autoload, was made with Noel Barnes in 1991. Working through Ibiza Records and the C.M.C name, he developed the Potential Badboy identity around records such as New Style and Work The Box, before joining SOUR in 1994.
The move gave him space to develop his studio work and the album Forward. He also worked in UK garage and on remixes through 3rd Eye Productions, before returning to jungle with DJ Hype’s Playaz circle in 2003. Play It Kik It, You’re Mine and Girlz became part of that run, keeping vocals and groove at the centre of his productions.
His self-titled 2015 album brought reggae and dub through a full-length jungle project. Revolution paired him with Demolition Man, while Take A While explored rolling liquid with Josh Bevan and Hazel Soze. More recently he has developed Hungry Hill, his own label, named in memory of collaborator Yush. The label’s releases include Hey Soundboy with vocalist Chez.
