Psychofreud is Norwegian producer Anders Figenschow, whose jungle records grew out of a background in hip-hop. Before that name appeared on breakbeat releases, he was producing for Oslo’s Most Wanted. The move into jungle came in the mid-1990s, and releases through Knowledge & Wisdom gave his music an audience beyond Norway.

That connection with hip-hop never disappeared. In an interview with Jaeger, he described continuing to work across styles, including the funk and disco project King Kanakas and the Gunmen partnership with Tony Anthem. Jungle is an established part of his catalogue, alongside music made under those other names.

His approach is particularly clear in the remix of Ivaylo’s Lifter. Rather than simply speeding up the house original, he rebuilt the rhythm and reshaped the vocals for a jungle version, keeping the bassline as the link between the two recordings. It is the kind of transformation that makes a remix a new arrangement with its own purpose.

After years of touring, family life and a day job changed how much time he spent on the road. The studio remained part of his life, however, with the same interest in moving between familiar influences and a different set of drums.
