Behind the music

About S.P.Y.

S.P.Y is Brazilian DJ and producer Carlos Lima. Originally from São Paulo, he moved to London in 2003 and later based himself in Bristol. His background includes graphic design, before music became the focus of a recording career that began with releases on Metalheadz.

His albums for Hospital Records include What The Future Holds, Back To Basics, and Dubplate Style. Across those projects, he has explored both melodic writing and the darker textures and breakbeats of jungle, using the album format to develop different parts of his sound.

Dubplate Style, released in 2019, put jungle's production methods at the centre of the project. Lima collected equipment associated with the genre's early years and imposed limits on his sessions, including using no more than 15 channels. For his DJ sets, he also makes specials, edits, and remixes that other DJs do not have, keeping the idea of exclusive music central to his approach.

In 2021, he launched his own label, DARKMTTR. Its first EP provided a home for his music outside the Hospital album catalogue, giving him a separate platform for releases under the S.P.Y name.

Later DARKMTTR releases include Closer, paired with Void in September 2025. The two-track release followed Spire in 2024, a track initially made for his DJ sets. Lima described setting himself the challenge of using contemporary jump-up bass sounds while retaining his own musical identity.
