Culture Shock is British drum and bass producer James Pountney. His work places melodic ideas within detailed club production, with considerable attention given to the construction of individual sounds as well as the finished arrangement.
His first releases appeared on Moving Shadow in 2004, before a longer association with RAM Records. The Sequence project brought a collection of his music together in 2019, followed by Sequel. The latter includes Recombine, another collaboration with Sub Focus, alongside Lost, Visions, and Rise. These projects offer a broader view than a single club release, showing related ideas developed across several recordings.
In a 2014 interview with UKF, Pountney described the challenge of finishing music when he wanted to build sounds from scratch. The same curiosity that helped him develop a distinctive production approach could also pull him towards experimentation before a track was complete. That account is a useful way of listening to his catalogue: the small details are part of a deliberate studio process, while the finished tracks still need to function as complete pieces of music. His collaborations and longer projects show that process finding an outlet beyond isolated sketches.
