Behind the music

About T. Power.

T.Power is the production name of Marc Royal, an electronic musician whose work connects early jungle and drum and bass with a background in hip-hop and electro. His own catalogue documents both the exploratory album The Self Evident Truth Of An Intuitive Mind and the collaborative Mutant Jazz with MK Ultra.

The latter moves from a relaxed opening into increasingly intricate jungle breaks. In an Insomniac retrospective and interview, Royal explained how limited sampling time had pushed him to chop and rearrange sounds rather than rely on complete loops. The constraint became part of the music’s inventiveness.

He also described entering rave music without feeling obliged to follow a fixed jungle template. Earlier hip-hop interests and the freedom of the developing scene gave him room to connect different musical ideas. The interview identifies Mutant Jazz as a shared production, a distinction retained in his artist-controlled catalogue.

His album writing offers another route into that outlook. The Self Evident Truth of an Intuitive Mind credits Royal as writer and producer and Cris Stevens as engineer, while the wider catalogue includes Waveform and later remastered recordings. These editions make the earlier work available again; their digital issue dates should be kept separate from the music’s original release history.
