Behind the music
About Tenor Fly.
Tenor Fly was Jonathan Sutter, a vocalist from Brixton whose career connected reggae soundsystems, jungle, and the wider UK bass scene. He began with Lloyd Coxsone’s International Sound System, developing his voice alongside the selectors and singers who made the sound come alive.
His late-1980s reggae and dancehall records led into collaborations with Rebel MC, later known as Congo Natty. That partnership carried into ragga jungle, where the vocal remained a central part of the music. 12 Years of Jungle, released in 2003, brought their shared recording history together.
Work with Top Cat produced the album Two Veterans in 2006, while Freestylers introduced his voice to another audience through We Rock Hard. He also featured on Tarantula, the Pendulum track also featuring DJ Fresh and MC Spyda. Those connections took the same performer into different musical settings without losing the soundsystem roots behind the delivery.
His later records include Born Again with Congo Natty and a vocal contribution to UK Allstars alongside other reggae and jungle MCs. Tenor Fly died in June 2016. Recalling their recording sessions, Congo Natty described how his first take often carried the strongest energy: a reminder that behind the familiar records was a performer who could make a moment count.
