Behind the music
About The Prototypes.
The Prototypes is the drum and bass project continued by Nick White, following its earlier years as a duo with Chris Garvey. Their background in Brighton's club scene led to a partnership built around energetic music for the dancefloor.
Releases through Shogun Audio and Viper Recordings brought that approach to a wider audience. The debut album, City Of Gold, arrived on Viper in 2015, combining vocal tracks and club material with excursions into other tempos.
Garvey subsequently began recording as Circadian, launching the solo project in 2023. White continued The Prototypes and went on to establish Roadblock Records with Benny V. The label offered a new outlet for their own music and releases by other producers.
White has described choosing records by their energy rather than limiting the label to one branch of drum and bass. His listening process extends beyond the studio: testing a track in different settings helps him decide whether it still makes an impact. That practical focus connects the project's club roots with his work selecting music for Roadblock.
