UK Apache is the vocalist and songwriter whose performance on Original Nuttah became one of jungle’s most recognisable voices. His reggae background shaped the delivery, but it was the distinctly British character of jungle that made him feel at home in the new music.
Before working with Shy FX, he had recorded with Potential Badboy. For Original Nuttah, the instrumental gave him a setting for lyrics and a character he had already been developing. He has emphasised that the vocal was his own writing, rooted in ideas and images he had carried with him before the session.
The record appeared in 1994 and kept finding new audiences. In 2019, Original Nuttah 25 brought a rebuilt rhythm and newly recorded vocals, alongside the Chase & Status remix featuring IRAH. Returning to the performance meant finding the original pitch and energy again, rather than simply reusing the old recording.
Apache has also spoken about stepping away from the scene for a decade and later returning to a warm reception. His work includes Jungle Fever and further collaborations beyond the best-known track. The story is that of a singer and writer with a long musical life around one enduring record, whose role in making it deserves to be heard as clearly as the familiar opening.
