Behind the music

About Ulterior Motive.

Ulterior Motive were the Bournemouth drum and bass partnership of James Davidson and Greg Hepworth. The pair met through mutual friends around 2000, having both started making beats independently. Their shared interest in the technical, futuristic side of late-1990s drum and bass developed into a studio partnership, with releases on Subtitles before a lasting connection with Metalheadz.

Their remix of Future Cut’s Obsession helped build that relationship. Goldie first approached them about an album at SUNANDBASS, but they initially felt they needed more time. The result was The Fourth Wall, released in 2014. They wanted the album to reflect their own sound, rather than imitate an expected Metalheadz style.

In 2017 they launched Guidance, extending their work into running a label. Their later releases included Step Change and Get Close. In January 2021, they announced the end of Ulterior Motive and a move towards individual projects, with Guidance continuing separately.
