Astrophonica started with a record that needed a home. When play:musik folded, Fracture and Neptune decided to release Clissold / Killerwhat? themselves in 2009. What began as an outlet for their own productions became a label willing to follow a good idea beyond the usual boundaries of drum and bass.
That openness runs through the catalogue. EPs by Dawn Day Night were followed by music from Moresounds, Sully, and Lewis James, while the Gradients compilations brought together DJ Earl, dBridge, and Luke Vibert. Jungle, footwork, and other forms of electronic music could sit together without the label needing to settle on a single template.
The sleeves have been part of its character, too. Customtone came in individually printed packaging, and UTILE helped develop Astrophonica’s visual identity. Fracture’s 0860, Philip D Kick’s Off World Tales, and Nikki Nair’s Renormalization Support Group show how far the catalogue has travelled from its first release. A 2024 reissue of the duo’s Clissold / The Limit brought an early recording back into circulation.
