Big echoes, bouncing synths, and a drop that makes good on the build-up: Dark Matter is the focus of our latest premiere from it is Jev and Dirtbox Recordings. Taken from his two-track Dark Matter / Off The Rails release, it puts a playful twist on the producer’s stomping neurofunk sound.
The synths give the track its character. There is something wonderfully strange about their bounce, drawing you into an unfamiliar world before the heavier sounds arrive. Beneath them, the drums keep everything firmly planted. That contrast between the wandering synths and the direct physical punch is what makes Dark Matter work.
Formerly one half of PRFCT Mandem, it is Jev brings an established production background to his solo alias. Dirtbox’s release notes point to previous backing from Eatbrain and Blackout, alongside remix work for Neonlight, Malux, Erb N Dub, and Crissy Criss. Here, the emphasis is on detailed bass design and percussion built to carry that detail onto the dancefloor.
We have already explored both tracks in our full review of Dark Matter / Off The Rails. This premiere gives Dark Matter its own spotlight: turn it up and follow those bouncing synths into the drop.
Dark Matter / Off The Rails is out now on Beatport and Spotify, with the wider release following on 23 October 2026.
