The groove is in place from the start of Celestial Dub. Gentle synths dance behind the drums, while a slow arpeggio gradually draws the arrangement forward. Mosaic builds on that movement with carefully placed percussion and echoed voices, giving the introduction plenty to follow before the drop.
When it lands, the percussion really comes into its own. The drums have a lively swing, with smooth sub-bass stabs punctuating the rhythm and keeping the low end mobile. Those bass notes are an active part of the groove, adding little nudges and changes of emphasis beneath the busier percussion.
Subtle brass riffs appear through the arrangement, bringing a warm touch to the synths and vocal echoes. Each detail has a clear place in the mix. The track holds together through the interplay between those parts, with enough variation to keep the rolling rhythm engaging as it settles into its stride.
Mosaic brings together Ben Soundscape and Noctem, the partnership of Lawrence Dodge and Rich Kingsmill. The South West trio previously released Landmark EP through Dispatch Recordings and returned to Intrigue Music with Cold Shade EP earlier this year. Here, the title track of their new Dispatch EP finds them balancing the gentler melodic elements with a particularly assured rhythm section.
